Reflections of a Mother's Heart

Mothering for Today March 11, 2009

Parenting is a tough job!  I am thankful God gives us guidance in His word.  Here are a few things the Lord has taught (and is still teaching) me!

1.  EXPRESS your love daily for your children.  Of course we do this in many ways:  making meals, making sure they have clean clothes to wear, bathing them, driving them to their many social events, and wiping their sweet dirty faces.  However these things don’t always scream “I love you” to our children.  They are too young to appreciate how these actions express love.  So we need to make sure we tell them we love them.  Play with your children and tickle them.  Hug and kiss them, and lovingly touch them as you talk and cuddle.  At night, I kiss my children’s palms and tell them to wrap their fingers tight around that kiss and  keep it until they need it.  They have come to love this ritual!  “(if I) have not love, it profits me nothing.   Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.”  1 Corinthians 13: 3, 7

2. EMPOWER them with God’s word.  Read scripture to your children.  There is no better way to start or end a day than in the Bible.  It helps to focus us and put our day into perspective.  Singing Bible verses is a great way to memorize scripture for the purpose of hiding God’s word in our hearts.  God’s word is living and refreshing to our souls.  “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart.  You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.”  Deuteronomy 6:6-7

3.  EQUIP them for adulthood with a strong foundation in their childhood.  Pray for your children and pray with them.  One day builds upon the next, so seize your time with your children and build into them Christ-like character, respect, obedience, and a thankful heart.   “Those who are planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God.”  Psalm 92:13

4.  ENCOURAGE your children.  They need to know they are special to you.  Be their biggest cheerleader, so they don’t need to look to anyone or anything else to fulfill that need.  I  try to specifically encourage each of my own children at least three times a day (ex. “Good job reading that big word!”  “Thank you for helping your sister!”  “That was very polite thing to do!”)  A little word of encouragement goes a long way.  “Encourage one another and build each other up.”  1Thessalonians 5:11

May the Lord bless you in your Mothering for Today!
