“It is a good thing to give thanks to the Lord!” That verse from Psalm 92:1 is appropriate for this time of year with Thanksgiving making its quick approach, but it is also a great verse for every day of the year! We have so much to be thankful for! God is totally awesome!!
To drive this point home and to encourage my children to think of even the small things to be thankful for, I made a Thankful Box when Lindsay and Logan were really little. It’s just a simple shoe box covered in paper. Each Thanksgiving we pull it out and write down things we are thankful for on pieces of paper. At the dinner table, we read them out loud and try to guess who wrote (or thought) of each one. We’ve laughed at some of the funnier ones: coffee, flannel sheets, cinnamon rolls, and e-mail. Then I’ve cherished the ones in my children’s handwriting like “home sweet home,” “colors,” “mommy,” “daddy,” and “when mom helps me not cry.” Wow! The things you can learn about what your children are thinking through a Thankful Box!
Of course, the most important One we are thankful for is Jesus! He left the perfectness of Heaven to come to the sinfulness of the world to die on the cross and rescue us from our sins! How thankful I am! That is something I can praise Him for every day of the year! Happy Thanksgiving!
